To see the infinite beauty of this place, The mangled limb, the devastated face, The innocent sufferers smiling at the rod, A fool were tempted to deny his God.

He sees, and shrinks; But if he look again, Lo beauty springing from the breast of pain!  He marks the sisters on the painful shores, And even a fool is silent and adores.

Paragon Airlines Inter-Island Link

The return trip to Kalaupapa took place on January 13, 2005.  After two short flights - the first from Honolulu to Molokai on Molokai Air Shuttle, and a short hop to Kalaupapa on Paragon Air, we landed on the runway of the tiny airport at Kalaupapa.

Our arrangements were made by Nick of Paragon Airlines.  In a day and age when customer service seems to be an afterthought, the service provided by Paragon Airlines was incredible on our first trip and this trip was no exception.  Unlike the larger carriers, you actually meet the pilots who are very professional.  The service they provide is more personal.  You can feel the aloha spirit and its obvious that they enjoy what they do.

This was my second trip to the peninsula and the first trip, for my mother.  She was the first of her generation to visit the peninsula.

We took the guided tour with Richard Marks, the owner and founder of Damien Tours.  Mr. Marks was a former patient who remained in Kalaupapa and has been a voice for the community throughout the years.  Kalaupapa is also the final resting place for many of his family members.  His historical perspective combined with his personal experience as a longtime resident and former patient adds to this awesome experience.

Road to Kalawao - Jan 2005

On the first visit, I was intimidated by the landscape and the [family] history.  I toured the peninsula with a very heavy heart.  One cannot help but feel the power or mana in this place.  It was no different on this trip.  Kalaupapa is a very powerful and spiritual place.  On this trip, I made it a point to look for the beauty . . . I found it.
