"Aunty Laie"

| B: 26 Oct 1912 D: 19 Sep 1939 |
Dorothy Laie Navia <Gasper> was the first child of Papa and Grandma Emma Kai. She was the oldest
of four children. Dorothy was known by her nieces and nephews as "Aunty Laie".
"Laie, as she was known, loved to fish , hula and loved her Hawaiian music. She was a happy and well-loved
person and had many friends. Her life was shortened due to a terminal condition and died on September 19, 1939, on the first
birthday of her youngest child . . . . " (Mary and Billy, "Aha O Na'Ohana - Gathering of the Family")
Many in our Ohana share the name "Laie". It is believed that this name is a derivative of Grandma
Emma Kai's mother, Laielohelani Kuehu. As was commonly done, when a child was given a middle name, it was one which
was usually that of a loved one whose character and/or qualities you admired.
At Aunty Laie's passing, she left behind five children. She was 27 years of age. Her nieces and
nephews still recall the impact her passing had on the Ohana. Her loss is still felt, even today.
